Arts and Activism Performances/Bridge Builders 2010

Activism Project/ Ladies Against Lies 2008

Currently, Flyaway is expanding our summer Art & Activism program into a year-round program serving many more girls throughout the year. With support from the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, we have new partnerships with Lyric, Oasis for Girls, and the June Jordan School for Equality. We are piloting programming both at the schools and in our studio, adapting the summer curriculum to fit the parameters of the school year.

Inspired by the company's mission to make dances that live at the intersection of acrobatic spectacle and social justice, Flyaway Productions' Arts and Activism Apprenticeship Program provides 15 young artists a paid summer apprenticeship, facilitating both dance-making and community–based activism. The program takes place every other summer at CounterPULSE (http://www.counterpulse.org) in San Francisco. CounterPULSE is our generous community partner for this apprenticeship.

The program is designed for low-income young women ages 14-20 who are strongly interested in performing, making positive change in the world and can commit to attending the entire seven weeks of the program. No previous dance experience is necessary. We bring together 15 young women from the Bay Area for seven weeks to:

  • Get hands-on experience in contemporary and aerial (off the ground) dance
  • Earn a generous summer stipend
  • Create original dances for performance
  • Learn and perform Flyaway's professional dance repertory with working dance artists
  • Research and carry out an activism project in our community
  • Connect with young women across neighborhoods, schools, ethnicity, sexual orientation
